Underage boys forced to work at grocery

Two underage boys were on Thursday found working at a grocery at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, and their parents later told Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA) officers that they needed the money to support their families.

The boys, ages 12 and 14, were summoned to the CC&PA office in Region Five and then to the Fort Wellington Police Station along with their mothers and the proprietor of the shop, after officers received information about the situation. Another 14-year-old boy who also worked at the shop was not there at the time when the officers visited.

Social workers rescue baby boy from rum shop

An 11-month-old baby boy was rescued around 6:30 am on Wednesday from a rum shop where his 31-year-old mother was drinking when officers from the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA) in Region Five made a sweep of the area.

The child was taken to Georgetown, while the mother, who had reportedly already consumed two bottles of red wine, was taken into police custody.

Thirteen-year-old girl allegedly raped by stepfather

A Berbice farmer who allegedly raped his 13-year-old stepdaughter around 3.45 am on Thursday was arrested the following day and released from custody yesterday without any charges being instituted.

Relatives learnt that the police have sent to file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. A doctor examined the first-form student and confirmed that she was sexually violated. Continue reading

Man, 62, arrested over alleged rape of step-granddaughter

A 62-year-old man is in police custody in Berbice for allegedly sexually molesting his step-granddaughter; the matter is also engaging the attention of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA)

On Friday last, teachers questioned the 10-year-old girl after they observed that she had attended school later than normal. They also became suspicious that something was wrong because the child was crying and behaving as though she was uncomfortable. Continue reading

Mother, 23 leaves children unattended while consuming alcohol

The Child Care and Protection Agency is said to be investigating a case where a 23-year-old mother of 3, left her children unattended last Sunday while she consumed alcohol.

According to reports, around 11.20 am, the mother was consuming alcohol with a female relative and four males, while her home was in a mess and her three children, aged nine, five and four were left unattended. The children are also not attending school. Continue reading
