‘Unfit’ mother admitted to hospital

The mother who was deemed unfit to care for her three-month-old baby has been admitted a patient at the psychiatric ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Officers from the Child Care & Protection Agency (CCPA) in Region Five had first taken the woman, 23-year-old Abiola Yakene France of Sophia, Georgetown in search of her relatives.

Mother deemed unfit to care for baby

Officers from the Child Care & Protection Agency (CCPA) in Region Five are trying to locate the relatives of a 23-year-old woman who has been deemed unfit to care for her three-month-old baby.

The woman, Abiola Yakene France who said she is from Sophia, Georgetown had taken the baby to the Fort Wellington Hospital (FWH) last Friday to be treated for a severe rash about the body.

She subsequently visited the probation department to meet someone and during her conversation she related that a relative of the baby boy “bathed him with trench water…” Continue reading

Car slams into gate at Bush Lot after swerving from bus

Several persons had a narrow escape when a car swerved to avoid hitting a bus, PEE 1988 that reportedly turned suddenly in front of it at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice (WCB) around midday on Friday.

According to reports the car, a Toyota Mark X PPP 8703 attached to the Competition & Consumer Affairs Commission also hit a parked truck, GFF9481 belonging to Samad Rahim.

The car which was heading to Georgetown then crashed into a gate before ending up in a yard. Reports are that the driver of the bus turned suddenly as the car was about to overtake, resulting in the collision.
 

 

Parents reunite with children in emotional scene

It was an emotional scene when some of the students from the Cotton Tree Primary who escaped injuries from a burning bus arrived home and reunited with their worried parents.

The parents hugged their children and cried and thanked the teachers for bringing them home safely. They did not even care that their children’s bags and other possessions were destroyed in the fire.

The parents, according to Regional Vice-chairman Rion Peters who lives at Cotton Tree, were uneasy after receiving “misinformation” that their children were badly burnt and were at the hospital. Continue reading

Two wounded in cutlass attack

cutlassA man who had threatened to kill the mother of his two children was wounded when he broke into her Number 4 Village, West Coast Berbice home, while he in turn wounded another man who managed to overpower him.

Police who were summoned to the scene rushed Odit Thom, 35, of Number 5 Village and Tevin Hamer, 18, of Number 4 Village to the Fort Wellington Hospital (FWH) where they were treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Both men underwent surgery for their wounds. Continue reading

Sandvoort residents’ library dream now a reality

For residents of Sandvoort, West Canje, establishing a library was always a dream which they felt would remain just that. But then that dream finally became a reality.

Feeling proud of their accomplishment, they stressed that it could not have happened without the input of Peace Corps volunteer, Matthew Cusimano.

The youth can hardly wait for the library to be officially opened by the end of this month although they still have had the opportunity to explore a few interesting books in the meantime.

Avon Store celebrates first anniversary

First anniversary: Customers of the Avon Store and Beauty & Home Systems Inc. at D’ Edward, West Coast Berbice were treated to special discounts and refreshments in honour of the branch’s first anniversary.
Director, Daniel Harricharran as well as employees from the Georgetown and Essequibo branches were present to celebrate the occasion with the manager, Christine Harricharran and staff. They held a simple prayer service and sticking of the anniversary cake.
Beauty & Home Systems Inc. was established in Suriname 15 years ago while the Avon business was set up five years later in that country and in Georgetown.
The company is the consultant and franchise holder for Avon’s health and beauty care line as well as the sole distributor for all KitchenAid and As Seen on TV brands in Guyana and Suriname.
It specializes in items including personal exercise equipment, automotive products, medicated pillows for back problems, micro foam bead pillows and other exclusive products such as Dr. Oz approved weight loss tablets.
Christine thanked the customers for their support and encouraged them to continue shopping and enjoy great deals.

Relatives appeal for justice for mechanic who was found dead in hotel pool

Ssideek-155x250Relatives of Sideek Juman of Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara whose body was pulled from a hotel pool one year ago are appealing for justice and bemoan the lack of co-operation from the police.

They are at their wits’ end trying to find out what went wrong and have been conducting their own investigations as they said, the “police are doing nothing.” Continue reading

West Berbicians enjoying new experience with opening of boutique and diner

With the grand opening of the Queens Boutique and Diner at Bath Settlement two Sundays ago, residents of West Berbice can enjoy a new experience.

The business was officially opened to the public last week Tuesday and customers are pleased that items that they would normally obtain in Georgetown are now within reach.

The restaurant offers iced coffees, cappuccinos, lattes, espressos and a variety of milkshakes and smoothies as well as ice creams with flavours like pistachios.

Social workers rescue baby boy from rum shop

An 11-month-old baby boy was rescued around 6:30 am on Wednesday from a rum shop where his 31-year-old mother was drinking when officers from the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA) in Region Five made a sweep of the area.

The child was taken to Georgetown, while the mother, who had reportedly already consumed two bottles of red wine, was taken into police custody.
